Automata: mechanical toys for grown-ups…

Automata are moving mechanical devices, usually constructed to look like a human or animal figure.   They often subtly express human emotions, and behaviours and can be quirkily humorous, in an understated way (but perhaps with a side helping of existential angst).

I have become fascinated with their construction and expressive potential, and playing with lots of different materials gives me joy. The problem solving required in the construction of the mechanics of even quite simple automata hits the sweet spot between frustration and satisfaction and is particularly addictive.

I have long been fascinated by decorative arts and pattern, and am inspired by folk art,  folk tales and decorative illustration traditions.  Automata offer a unique combination of possibilities for bringing all these things together, and I am excited to start working on lots of new ideas.
